A prickly, endemic poppy that is usually found growing in arid conditions, such as a lava field. Its dainty white petals that spread open 3 inches wide surround bright yellow central stamens and a dark-tipped pistil. Its prickly seed capsules scatter seeds that can withstand fire. The yellowish juice from the plant was formerly used by the Hawaiians as a narcotic to relieve the pain of toothache, neuralgia and ulcers.
